Instructions
After an introductory instruction and a trial task, the test is completed in time-limited manner, in multiple choice format (single or multiple selection from 3, 4 or 5 alternatives). One task per page is shown, which can be solved by means of logical conclusions. It is possible to skip items, and to scroll forwards and backwards.
DEDUCTION is available in 2 versions: The basic version DEDUCTION covers all levels of difficulty and is suitable for sampling at low and medium skill levels. DEDUCTION+ focuses on medium and difficult items and is suitable for samples with higher skill levels.
The procedure is implemented in liquid format: the tasks are drawn from a pool and arranged according to increasing difficulty, whereby test difficulty and subject areas are kept constant for all participants.
Theoretical background
Verbal reasoning is a subsection of cognitive abilities. The test ascertains the extent to which a person can process complex verbal information. This involves the process of storing information, keeping it available and then correlating it on the basis of logical and accurate thought processes. DEDUCTION therefore includes relational tasks in which a logical conclusion must be derived from several premises. The tasks have a different number of conditions, which involves a higher degree of difficulty when solving the task. Focusing on a verbal task allows a valid measurement of individual competence in dealing with demanding verbal content in a short period of time.
Verbal reasoning is relevant to professional success when complex verbal information needs to be processed on a regular basis. This is the case for a large number of activities in which verbal content must be recorded in writing or orally and conclusions drawn from it.
